A radio embedded in a festival?
The idea behind Radio Oltranzista is simple: produce a radiophonic event using crossing media platform. We thought about it not from the “form†point of view but from the content one: the people and the things they want to say have to make the method and the tools to be used.
Then embed this radio flowing from the bottom to the sky into a festival to be able to broadcast in FM.
Broadcast to a media that you ear in the traffic or while cooking, without computers or invasions of your space. A so called “not yet fashionable media”. Radio: open to casual contacts, as any radio should. Technologically easy to make and to be used, perceived as a close thing, a wisper, in the era of screams and invasion of privacy. Radio from any media, in any time, and that you might be able to call-in if you find your way to it, if you are motivated enough…
The try out edition of Radio Oltranzista has been put up for 5 days off festival here in Amsterdam, from 4 to 8 of July 2007.
We did broadcasting from fixed and mobile location using streaming media. We broadcasted from skype phones, VoiP, telephone, random intercept, streaming. Mixed from youTube, MySpace, old records, found tapes… and interacted with it live, with wood, iron, flesh, eyes, breath, alcool, food, fists, random chat, email, digital cameras, photography, mobile phones, computers…
All medias used as immediately as possible and getting transformed on a flow of thoughts and sounds… just for love. The media became a transformer and made himself.
This tryout took almost 2 years of preparation to start to fly, took high and low tides, positive energies and destructive depression, and now is again OFF the AIR. How can I say that I miss it? Already? Well, I promise to myself that I would not be intoxicated by radio, but is difficult. So is a goodbye, friends, until next time, until next ON AIR light switches on.
NOTE:
After 5 days or 6o hours of live broadcast there is much material that waits to be selected. Oltranzists here are each one putting some time in deciding what to save for (hem) posterity and put here available.
So on this web site you will find for now a memory and some highlights of the materials produced will appear from time to time as podcasts. We are getting our energies back together and our batteries to reload. We will be grateful to all friends, resistent oltranzists and nice people that would like to link back to us.

5 days off festival
days off is in 2001 ontstaan als spin-off van het Gentse 10 days off festival. Het was het eerste meerdaagse indoor dance evenement in Nederland. Het festival heeft de afgelopen jaren een steeds breder programma geboden dat een kwalitatief hoogwaardige doorsnede wil bieden van de internationale elektronische muziek en heeft daarmee zowel nationaal als internationaal een sterke reputatie opgebouwd. Daarnaast is er de laatste jaren in toenemende mate aandacht voor andere, aangrenzende kunstvormen zoals mediakunst. Van een redelijk kleinschalig festival in de Amsterdamse Melkweg is het uitgegroeid tot een heus stadsfestival, waarbij ook Paradiso, het Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst en zelfs de Heineken Music Hall zijn betrokken.
